Pearl Mountain

Paarl Rock

The district is particularly well known for its Pearl Mountain or "Paarl Rock" (derived from Parel, meaning Pearl in Dutch). This huge granite rock is formed by three rounded outcrops that make up Paarl Mountain and has been compared in majesty to Uluru (formerly known as Ayers Rock) in Australia.

French Huguenots

Huguenot Monument

The Huguenot Monument s dedicated to the cultural influences that French Huguenots have brought to the Cape Colony after their immigration during the 17th and 18th centuries. Also on the site are wine cellars joined by a colonnade, which bears the words Post Tenebras Lux (lit. "after darkness [comes] light").

Winelands Capital

Wine Barrel
Founded in 1679, it is South Africa's second oldest town after Cape Town , by the Governor of the Cape Colony, Simon van der Stel, who named it after himself — Stellenbosch means "(van der) Stel's forest". It is situated on the banks of the Eerste River ("First River"), so named as it was the first new river he reached and followed when Jan van Riebeeck sent him from Cape Town on an expedition over the Cape Flats to explore the territory towards what is now known as Stellenbosch.
