Whale Spotting

Whale Crier

Whale Crier
A whale crier is employed by Hermanus (since 1992) to notify watchers when and where whales are spotted by sounding a kelp horn. The whale crier wears a sandwich board informing watchers how to interpret the code for the spots where whales have been sighted.

Whale Facts
Southern Right Whales are baleen whales and are readily distinguished from other whales by the callosities on their heads, a broad back without a dorsal fin, and a long arching mouth that begins above the eye. They migrate from the colder southern polar waters to this area during June to November for mating and calving.
