Historical Hotspot

Robben Island

This island named “seal island” in Dutch primarily served to isolate people from the late 17th century for various reasons. It was here that former South African President and Nobel Laureate Nelson Mandela and former South African President Kgalema Motlanthe, alongside many other political prisoners, spent decades imprisoned during the apartheid era.

Langa Township

Chief Langalibalele

Chief Langalibalele
Established in 1923, Langa is the oldest area in Cape Town that that were designated for Black Africans before the apartheid era. Although Langa literally means 'sun' in isiXhosa, the name of the township is derived from the name of Langalibalele, a chief of the amaHlubi people and renowned rainmaker, who in 1873 was imprisoned on Robben Island for rebelling against the Natal government. Hence Langa is often called "Kwa-Langa" meaning 'place of Langa'.

Cape Culture

District Six
With its central location above the city, District Six became a multi-racial and vibrant community and a cultural centre for the working class. It however became signatory to the racial struggles of apartheid due to the forced removal of people after being declared a whites-only area under the Group Areas Act in 1966. In 1989 the District Six Museum Foundation was established, and in 1994 the District Six Museum came into being. It serves as a remembrance to the events of the apartheid era as well as the culture and history of the area.
